Like everything, NASCAR had to start somewhere and the Southern United States was this sport’s birthplace.

Stock car racing in the United States has its origins in “bootlegging” during the 1920’s and early 30’s Prohibition era, when drivers ran whiskey or “moonshine” from hidden stills to hundreds of markets across the Southern United States. Many of the drivers would modify their cars to improve handling and speed in an attempt to outrun the police. As bootlegging grew, the drivers began to race among themselves on Sunday afternoons to see who had the fastest cars. Inevitably people came out to watch the races, and racing moonshine cars on Sunday afternoons became extremely popular – NASCAR history had begun.

To say that Kyle Busch was dominant at Bristol would be an understatement. In fact, it seemed that every race was his to lose, but he ran mistake-free, and did something that no other driver has done in the history of NASCAR: he won all three races at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Kevin Harvick held off Denny Hamlin and three Roush drivers to win at Michigan, and clinch a spot in the Chase. The win was the 14th of his career – his 3rd this season - and made Harvick a solid favorite to win the championship this year.

Juan Montoya has been frustrated. He felt that he had the best car in the last couple of races, only to have victory snatched from him in unfortunate incidents, mainly in the pits. All of that ended for him at Watkins Glen on Sunday.

After an eventful week, in which his car owner was involved in his second plane crash, and an eventful race, with hard crashes by Kurt Busch and Elliott Sadler, red flags, and rain delays, Greg Biffle pulled away from the field, and finished nearly 3.6 seconds ahead of Tony Stewart for the victory at Pocono Raceway. This was Biffle’s 15th win in the Cup series, but only his first victory since 2008.

After qualifying, practice, and most of the race on Sunday, everyone thought it was Juan Montoya’s weekend. The Brickyard 400 was his to lose. In fact, as Jamie McMurray found himself consistently behind Montoya lap after lap, he had all but planned to settle for the runner-up cash. But that, as they say, is why they ‘play the game’.

This time, it didn’t rain. There were no drops on the windshield, and no one in the pits praying for the skies to open up and NASCAR officials to call the race. This time, it was a legitimate, full-race win for David Reutimann at Chicagoland Speedway.

In a day filled with late-race bumping and nudging, Jimmie Johnson moved Kurt Busch out of the way, took the lead a lap from the end, and won his 5th race of the season. The win ties him with Denny Hamlin for the most wins on the circuit this year.
